Degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Bologna in 1978
Other professional and educational qualifications:
Specialization in Orthopedics and Traumatology at the University of Bologna, and in Physiotherapy from the University of Parma.
Work experience (positions held):
May 1980 – June 1989: Assistant and Attending Surgeon in the Orthopedic and Traumatology Department at the “Arcispedale S.Maria Nuova” in Reggio Emilia.
July 1989 – June 2000: Medical Director at the Rizzoli Orthopedics Institute in Bologna in the 1st Division dept.
June 2000 – to date: Department Chief in charge of an autonomous section of the Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Dept with 11 beds.
He performed 698 surgical operations in Reggio Emilia, predominatly in hand surgery, lower limb osteosynthesis and knee arthroscopy.
He has carried out clinical and research practice at the Rizzoli Orthopedics Institute in Bologna.
As the main surgeon he has performed over 7000 surgical operations to date (predominately knee, shoulder and elbow surgery)
Teaching Activities:
He taught at the Professional Nursing School in Reggio Emilia and Bologna from 1980-2000. He has been an untenured professor at the Specialization School of Orthopedics and Traumatology at the University of Bologna since 2002 teaching shoulder and knee pathology.
Scientific Activities:
He has participated as a speaker or moderator at over 250 national and international conferences. He has published 3 chapters on orthopedical matters and over 120 scientific essays on orthopedic-traumatology matters, 63 of which are indexed for medline. He has been in charge of 16 research projects at the Rizzoli Orthopedics Institute and has collaborated on another 64 projects.
He has collaborated on several patents: epicondylitis orthosis, miniplates for the apportionment of rotary cuff surgery, a postoperative shoulder tutor, and a shoulder prosthesis model.
He has been an associated member of SECEC (Societé Europenne de la Chirurgie de l’Epaule e du Coude) since 2002, a member of the editorial board on the orthopedics journal “Surgery of the Organs of Movement” since 2004, and has been on the board of SICSeG (The Italian Society of Shoulder and Knee Surgery) since 2005 where he has been vicepresident since 2009.
He is a member on the scientific board of Sphera medical journal.
He has been a member of the board of SERTOT (Emiliano-Romagnola Triveneto Orthopedics and Traumatology Society) since 2010.
Clinical and/or scientific interests:
Traumatic and degenerative shoulder and elbow pathology (regenerative medicine for the rotary cuff and shoulder and elbow prosthesis).
